Templo de Debod is an ancient Egyptian monument, built ca. 2200 years ago and dedicated to the cult of the ancient gods Isis and Amun. Since 1968 the Temple is situated in Madrid, Spain. Egyptian government donated the Temple to Spain in gratitude for the assistance Spain provided in rescuing the temples in Nubia. Today the antic Temple surrounded by a palms park is located near Plaza de España in Madrid and open for visitors.
As I asked my friends who have visited Madrid before about their favorite place, they all responded the same — Templo de Debod. Myself, I found the lovely park by accident, when my first day of sightseeing was coming to an end. I was surprised by the calmness spread around. And somehow it became clear – there’s something special, magical in this place.
Surrounded by green lawns and palm trees the ancient Egyptian Temple stands in the middle of the pool as a very generous present.
You only have to sit down on the lawn and you’re already feeling something unusual — as if you would grow into the grass and merge with the smell of greenery and sunshine.
It is quiet and calm. The teenage companies are loud. Some children are screaming. The guests of the city are speaking all the world languages. A police car is driving peaceful on the narrow paths and checking the order. All this doesn’t disturb your rest and calmness, only making a nice background for this replacing music in your headphones.
Due to its location on a hill Templo de Depod is considered to be the best place in Madrid to enjoy the sunset.
Also it’s the best place to read, write down some thoughts or just sleep. Templo de Debod is a quiet, evergreen, full o palm trees corner in the heart of the bustling cosmopolitan city.
This is Temple in the afternoon.
When the night falls down, it becomes noisy, crowded and hopelessly drunk. It’s a meeting place for hundreds of young people who want once again to break the law by drinking alcoholic beverages in public places.
During my stay in Madrid, I often participated in flash mobs, for example, “Come to the Temple wearing white, black, yellow” … or simply “let’s get 5000 people!”
This is where I had the very first party with my new friends from all over the world and this is where our farewells took place.
As you might guess from my sweet descriptions, Templo de Debod became also my favorite place in Madrid. And pretty often I dream of going back, in the evergreen park, to the ancient Temple.
